Graz - European Capital of Culture

Graz is an eclectic mix of UNESCO world heritage, shopping, Italian-like nightlife, fascinating history, culture and modern art. Indeed, Austria's second largest city is now a cultural capital and congress venue of international repute.

Since 2003, the city's reputation as a successful European capital of culture has grown considerably. Innovative contemporary buildings such as the Kunsthaus (modern art gallery) - a "friendly alien" - and the island in the River Mur have had a significant impact on the scene.

Graz's historic centre with its unique blend of architectural styles from Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, Art Nouveau to Modern was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city's charm and its Mediterranean flair are to be felt all around in the cobbled streets, lively squares and quiet inner courtyards.

Four universities with over 35,000 students, many scientific institutions and the automotive cluster with leading international companies have also earned Graz an excellent reputation as a scientific and business centre in south-eastern Europe.

Restaurants in Graz serve a wide range of culinary delights. From Styrian to Mediterranean and exotic, there truly is something for every taste. Regional specialities, such as the dark pumpkin seed oil, southern Styrian wine or meat and vegetables straight from the farm form the backbone of the province's famous cuisine.
