Examining the backgrounds and the changing requirements, the European All-Wheel Drive Congress Graz 2009 presented new solutions and approaches in the field of all-wheel drive technology.

It was concluded that environment friendliness, safety and driving pleasure do not have to be conflicting objectives.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE AND MORE

A future with all-wheel drive? All-wheel drive with a future!

The diversity of topics in the talks of the 9th European All-Wheel Drive Congress Graz 2009 showed that the general framework for all-wheel technology has undergone decisive changes. Increasing environmental awareness, slowdown in sales and a radically changed customer behavior as well as electrification and hybrid technologies are the themes which will crucially influence the future of all-wheel drive.

Main issues were the development of the all-wheel-drive market after the crisis in general, and specifically in China and Russia. The topic of alternative drives and their explosive nature was reflected in four talks about hybrids and electrification, starting first with components such as electric axles for increased traction, energy management systems based on lithium-ion batteries, the concept of a hybrid off-road vehicle (MILA Alpin) and an all-wheel-drive compatible electric vehicle (mila ev). Other topics dealt with the effectiveness of improving all-wheel-drive strategies, components and lubricating concepts as well as new and innovative all-wheel-drive systems. Despite the immense challenges to the market, it was demonstrated that there are still many possibilities open to ensure a continuing successful future with all-wheel drive.
